I’ve been there. Nine years in a first-grade dual language classroom, and the search for good Spanish decodable readers never got easier. It was just something I kept doing, year after year.
Your Bilingual Students Deserve Books Built For Spanish, Not Translated
Here’s the thing nobody tells you before you start teaching in a dual language classroom:
Spanish and English don’t decode the same way, so you can’t just translate a decodable text from one language to the other and expect it to work.
That’s exactly why decodable texts for dual language classrooms need to center Spanish phonics, not treat it as an afterthought.
Every time I went looking for Spanish decodable readers, I ran into the same three problems, over and over. For example, when my students were learning syllables with m (ma, me, mi, mo, mu) or b (ba, be, bi, bo, bu), this is what I found:
- They were translated, not written for Spanish. Publishers translated English decodables into Spanish, and it showed. The sentence structure was clunky. Plus, the vocabulary didn’t reflect how people actually speak Spanish, and the syllable patterns my students needed to practice weren’t even the focus.
- They were too hard. Books that claimed to be “beginner” Spanish readers packed in vocabulary and sentence complexity way beyond what my students could handle. They were just learning to decode ma-me-mi-mo-mu.
- Sometimes, they just didn’t exist. I would spend hours searching on Google and Teachers Pay Teachers, and search results would come up empty. Nothing. Still, I couldn’t believe how much time I was spending just searching for materials I needed in Spanish.
Bilingual learners deserve libros decodificables en español that start from Spanish syllable principles. These books need authentic language, culturally relevant characters and settings, and a level of simplicity that matches exactly where a reader is in their decoding journey.
Spanish Decodables Authentically Built for Spanish Syllables

- Small group instruction: Pull the matching decodable for a guided reading group that needs extra practice with a specific syllable before moving on.
