Why Spanish Alphabet Anchor Charts Are a Game-Changer for Teaching Letter sounds
Hola! In this post I am going to show you how to use the Spanish Alphabet Anchor Charts. In this post you will see the anchor chart for the letter M. You can find the complete set inside the Biliteracy Builders Membership. Click here to access ALL of the Spanish Alphabet Anchor Charts.
How to Use the Spanish Alphabet Anchor Charts:
Step 1
First you are going to print out the materials. You can find the FREEBIE download below for the letter M. You will find a guidelines page that gives you friendly reminders when creating anchor charts with your students.
Here’s what is included inside the FREEBIE download:
- Guidelines
- Lesson Plan
- List of words with M
- Student Practice Page
- “Palabras que comienzan con la” header
- Traceable Letter M
- Printable Letter M
- 20 Black & White Picture Cards (also available in color)
- Blank Picture Cards (optional – for writing own words)
Step 2
Prior to the lesson, I recommend preparing the anchor chart. This includes cutting and placing the header and the letter on the anchor chart. This activity is meant to be used whole group, but can also be adapted for a small group. This lesson aligns with the Common Core State Standards en Español, RF.K.1.D and L.K.1.A.
You will also need to cut out the picture cards. You can select between the black and white and the color option. If you want to save on time during your lesson, you may want to give students the colored option. However, if possible, I recommend having students color the picture, as this will be more engaging and students will feel more involved in the process of creating the anchor chart.
Step 3
Introduce the letter M to students by showing them the anchor chart. Say the name of the letter and the sound it makes. Students will repeat the sound. It is important that students understand what sound the letter makes. Show the students how to write the letter M.
Step 4
Tell students they will each get a picture that starts with the letter M. They will first color the picture and read the word. Give students about 5 minutes to color and read their pictures. If you have any early finishers, have them write a word of their own on one of the blank cards or give them another picture card. There are a total of 20 pictures cards.
Step 5
Next, come together as a class. Call on each student to share their word with the class and glue it on the anchor chart. After putting up all the words on the anchor chart, review all of the words. Use a finger pointer for extra fun when pointing to the words. You can practice the words multiple times by having a student helper come point to the words and the whole class reads them orally.
Step 6
For extra practice, you can have a student come find the letter M at the beginning of the word and have them highlight or circle the letter. This can be completed during the same lesson or following lesson. It helps reinforce the connection of the letter sound to the letter in the beginning of the word. You can assign the student activity page as independent work or as homework.
Also, as a bonus on these Spanish Alphabet Anchor Charts, you get a list of words that begin with the letter M that are kid-friendly. Sometimes it is so hard to come up with words that follow the pattern you are trying to teach. I have simplified this part for you by creating a list of kid-friendly words. They are very easy to use and categorized by noun, verb, and adjective.
Why Use Anchor Charts for Teaching Letter Sounds?
Here’s why I love using these charts: they don’t just decorate your walls—they work. When kids see the same chart every day, they start recognizing the letter sounds much faster. They can glance up at it during lessons, independent work, or even when they’re just wandering around the room. It’s like having a constant, friendly reminder of what they’ve learned!
And when kids have that visual support? Trust me, it helps them feel more confident when they’re reading or writing.
