Bilingual Partner Pairing Cards for Turn and Talks

What are bilingual partner pairing cards? They are cards that help your students participate in a turn and talk. It is a fun way to let students know when it is their turn to listen or talk.
A turn and talk is a way for you to incorporate more speaking and listening opportunities for your students in the classroom. It allows for multiple students to talk and share their ideas. Being able to talk about ideas is super important in a bilingual classroom. But what is it that you need to know about turn and talks? Keep reading to find out what you need to know about them.
#1 – Routines & Procedures

When implementing turn and talks in your classroom, setting the routines and procedures is essential. When you can create the turn and talk into a routine that students can follow, you will save yourself from headaches and having to repeat yourself multiple times.
Here is a simple procedure you can follow when you are first introducing the turn and talk:
- Get the class’s attention. For example, you can use a call and response “clase, clase” or clapping or holding up your hand.
- Explain to students what a turn and talk looks like. Tell them that a turn and talk is when they turn facing their partner, and it is time they will use to practice talking about a topic. Each student will take turns in the conversation. In the beginning, you will want to assign a partner A and a partner B.
- Next, model a turn-and-talk. Often, students do not know the structure of the conversation. It is important to model it with another adult or student in the class. That way, students will be clear about the expectations.
- Have students practice the turn-and-talk with their partner. I recommend having a predetermined list of partners. Alternatively, you can assign them by proximity. Students will need to practice the procedure multiple times before mastering it. Give them time for a practice session using questions about them, such as “What is your favorite game at recess?” The procedure is for Partner A to share first, and Partner B will listen. Give them about 30 seconds to 1 minute to share. Then, have the students “switch,” and then Partner B will share, and Partner A will listen.
It may be tempting to skip setting up the procedure, but please do not skip this step. It will save you so much time and words! Once your students learn the routine, you will only need to say the “turn and talk,” and students will know what you mean.
#2 – Use Visuals

When setting up your turn-and-talk routines, it really helps to have visuals to explain them. Use an anchor chart or find a poster that shows how students should sit down and turn to their partner. This poster is very beneficial, especially for young learners. I also like to use a set of Google Slides to explain the procedure.
You can also have visuals for each partner. Instead of naming students Partner A or Partner B, you can inject fun into the routine by using bilingual partner pairing cards. Below is a sample freebie of the bilingual partner pairing cards.

#3 – Practice, Practice, Practice!

The last thing you need to know about turn and talks is that students are going to need lots of time to practice, practice, practice! This procedure is not going to happen over just one lesson. The more you can practice and incorporate this routine into your classroom, the sooner your students become more independent.
