Oracy and Community Aren’t Built in a Single Lesson
Oracy, the ability to speak and listen, isn’t something you can teach in one lesson and check off. Neither is classroom community.
Both are built in small moments, repeated over and over, all year long.
For a long time, the moments I had for that in my own classroom were unplanned: whatever came up at lunch, whatever students happened to talk about while lining up. It worked, but it wasn’t consistent.
I wanted a routine that gave every student an equal chance to talk and be heard.
This resource actually started because a member in the Biliteracy Builders community asked for exactly that: something to build oracy and connection for her students. I built it for her, inspired by Snack Talk, a visual conversation strategy developed by the University of Washington’s Haring Center that uses image-based question cards during mealtimes to support interaction between learners.
The research behind it shows real results: more child-to-child interaction, less challenging behavior, and higher engagement for both students and teachers. I loved the idea, but I couldn’t find a bilingual version built for a dual language classroom, so I made one. It’s become one of the most popular resources in the membership since.
What’s Inside the August Table Talks
August Table Talks is built for K-2 dual language classrooms. The questions and sentence frames stretch easily up through 3rd grade.
It’s a set of daily conversation-starter cards. It has one question for every school day in August. Each question is written in both Spanish and English.
Every card includes:
- A question written side by side in English and Spanish, so every student can access it in the language they’re most comfortable with
- Visual supports for many questions (like favorite animals, recess activities, or favorite books), so younger students or emerging readers can respond
- A sentence frame in both languages, so students have a scaffold for turning their spoken answer into a written one
Questions range from favorites (favorite animal, favorite book, favorite recess activity) to more personal reflections (what did you do this weekend), giving students a mix of easy entry points and deeper sharing as the month goes on.
How to Use Table Talks in Your Classroom
🌞Morning meeting: Open the day with the question as a whole-group share, so every student has a chance to talk before instruction even starts.
🍎Table talk at lunch or snack: Post or hand out the day’s card at the tables, so students have something to talk about with each other.
🙏Partner talk warm-up: Use the question as a quick partner-share before a writing block, so students rehearse their answer out loud before writing it down.
✏️Writing center: Pair the card with the sentence frame for an independent or center-based writing task once students are familiar with the routine.
Language rotation: If your program alternates languages by day, match the question’s language emphasis to whichever language block you’re in that day.
However you use it, the same thing happens every time: students get a low-stakes, repeated chance to talk, listen, and be heard, in both languages.
