#1 – Happy New Year’s Hat

Celebrate the new year with your students by creating a new year’s hat. You can do this low-prep and fun activity during class in under 15 minutes. Students have a lot of fun creating something they can wear, and this also helps create a festive environment. This is especially helpful on your first day back from winter break, when students are tired and need a simple activity to help get them started.
Students color, cut, and glue this on a sentence strip to create a hat. After everyone completes their hat, take a New Year’s class photo to share it with families.
#2 – New Year’s Resolutions Craftivity

Help students set New Year’s resolutions for the rest of the school year. Brainstorm ideas of what skills they can improve on in school. They can be something as simple as a skill they are working on in reading, writing, or math. Students can also set behavior goals for the new year.
The New Year’s Resolutions Craftivity is very simple to create. First, you print out the topper and writing sections. Students color the topper with the year on it and then write down their goal. Then, students cut and paste everything together.
#3 – “I have a dream” Writing

Martin Luther King Jr. is an important figure in our country’s history. Teaching about MLK generates a lot of great conversations about treating others with kindness and respect. In this activity, students write about their own dreams for the future.
This is a low-prep “I have a dream” writing activity. Students color the topper and write out their dreams on the paper. Then everything gets cut and pasted together. You can find this resource and more about MLK inside the Biliteracy Builders Membership.
#4 – January Virtual Classroom

You might be thinking about what a January Virtual Classroom is. A virtual classroom essentially consists of slides with links on them. The links lead to different resources that teachers and students can use. They are centered around a particular topic, in this case, January. You can also share these slides with students on Google Classroom.
I’ve included links to January-themed directed drawings, Spanish read-alouds, English read-alouds, and winter-themed brain breaks.
You can use these to give students a brain break between subjects. This virtual classroom would be a perfect option if you’re rushing to find things to assign to a substitute teacher.

#5 – January Write the Room

Have you used a write-the-room activity before? This was one of my first graders’ favorite activities. Write-the-room activities are perfect for practicing vocabulary. They help students practice reading and writing. And this is very engaging because students get to move around in the classroom.
First, you print out the vocabulary picture cards and a recording sheet. Then, you cut them out and tape them around the classroom. Remember to place it on students’ eye level so they can easily see the words they will write down. Then, give students a recording sheet. You can differentiate this by selecting a recording sheet where they can trace the words they find or a blank to write the complete word.
#6 – January Color by Code

Reinforce students’ math skills by using a color-by-code activity. These activities are differentiated by skill: number recognition, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The text is in Spanish.
For primary learners, go over the colors together. This will help differentiate the task for those who are beginning readers. Students color the crayon with the appropriate color and then continue with the task. If students are completing addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, have them solve the problems first before coloring. The important thing is that they are practicing the number skill.
